Please be careful in the pond

Postby Bonnie on Tue Sep 02, 2008 3:26 am

Saturday we drained down the lower pond to get out the baby fish as the kingfisher has become a regular here and taking my babies.

We only had about 5 inches of water left in the pond and the big fish were getting stressed as we tried to catch all the babies. We got all the babies out but one.

Then I fell and hit my right side on the plant shelf. I knew immediately I was hurt as I heard a crack as I hit. Must have been the adrenalin as I was almost out of the pond by the time Rich got to me and helped me the rest of the way out. He was able to get me in a chair near the pond. I sat there for a few minutes but the longer I sat the worse it got. So he had to call an ambulance. No way was I able to navigate the deck stairs to get into the house and I knew I had to go the hospital anyway.

I cracked my 7th rib and bruised my liver. It will be weeks, if not months of recovery. Two days later I am home from the hospital and I hurt something awful. I can not cough or breath deeply. I have to walk by sliding my feet. I will be a long time until I can get down to the greenhouse as stairs are impossible. Thankfully Rich is here all the time with me so he can help me get up and down. What little sleep I manage after taking a pain pill, is in a recliner.

I encourage you to post here if you are having a problem as I am going to be slow to reply to emails and we have some fantastic help here. Since Rich and I work together in the greenhouse, he will have to get the orders ready for shipping by himself. No problem as he knows how it is done. He is just a little slower than I am in boxing up the orders.

The point I want to make, is be extremely careful in the pond. Over the years, I have had many emails of falls in the pond that actually caused head injuries and breaks.

I was wearing aqua shoes and that did help until I stepped on an extremely slippery spot.

Another word of caution, if you go in the pond, make sure some one is close by to help you in case you do fall. Rich goes in our pond regularly and I will not let him go in the pond again without telling me.

If Rich had not been close by I have no idea how I would have gotten the rest of the way out!

Ouch Bonnie! Take it easy and make sure you are 100% fully recovered before attempting that again

I saw my family doctor yesterday. He says it will be about 8 weeks for the rib to heal. And I must exercise great care so the rib does not puncture an organ.

A friend said "think of it as 8 weeks unpaid vacation and with enough drugs you can imagine you are on a sandy beach"

A vacation for me probably but not for Rich. I am totally dependent on him to get up and down and he has taken over my chores plus all the cooking and cleaning chores.

One thing I would recommend is to use Potassium Permanganate to kill off algae before going in the pond. Even then one must be extremely careful.

Also I can not stress how important it is not to go into the pond with some one else close by!

I hear ya. I didn't know women could pull a groin...that's my experience  . Haven't done the splitz like that since i was like 10 and it doesn't take much to aggrivate it now. I think I heard the fish laughing as well and not a one of them came to my rescue.

Bonnie so sorry to hear about your accident wishing you a speedy recovery. If I lived closer to you I would volunteer to help Rich with the packaging or anything else that might need done.

Bonnie, I hope you heal quickly. Ribs are so tender. My husband travels a lot so I'm in the pond without another soul around to help when I fall.
I try to be careful but those slippery sides!!!!! I'll exercise more care.
Wishing you a very speedy recovery.
Thank you Rich for taking such good care of our Bonnie. J-net

Sorry to hear you are laid up Bonnie.

For all who venture in a pond please have a buddy watching you.
Also wool socks are very good for (some) traction, but remember to keep your head over the ends of your toes and your knees bent. NEVER stand upright! You skaters/skiers know what I mean.

Thank you for the well wishes and the cards! Over 60 have come in the mail at last count.

I am doing a bit better. Doctor says in 6 or 7 more weeks, I will be good as new if I am careful now. Biggest danger is the cracked rib puncturing an organ if I fall again.

And dang I saw the black butterfly baby on the camera today. The only one I really wanted to save from the kingfisher and the only one we did not catch before I fell. He will go for a mint, to pay for the ambulance. LOL If we ever catch him.

It hurts to cough, sneeze, laugh. And OMG I thought I would die when I got the hiccups a couple of days ago.

I miss my many trips down the greenhouse a day to feed the fish and check out the plants.

It is hard on Rich to pick up the slack. He did manage to get all the plants boxed for shipping the past 2 weeks. Normally we work together on orders boxing them up. He brings them up to the house where I print the labels between drugs, I mean naps.

And he learned to make toast without burning it. In fact he only burned it one time this past week. LOL Although the smoke alarm when off when he tried to fry bacon for sandwiches.

Thanks for all the help on the forum. It is greatly appreciated.

Love to all,

Bonnie

Bonnie, I am so sorry. I broke 2 ribs a couple of years ago when I fell under and horse and got stepped on. Drugs are important, and so is remembering to cough and deep breathe even if it does hurt so you don't get pneumonia.
So long and thanks for all the fish!
