Was that a deer lurking???

Postby medokie on Wed Dec 12, 2007 8:08 pm

Ok, today as I was goofing off I checked out Bonnies above water cam to see if she had the ice that we have. No ice, but in the back of her picture she had a deer. I couldn't see it well enough to say for sure, but it looked bigger than a dog and it moved like a deer. Just never know what lurks in our backyards when we aren't watching do we?

Maybe it was one of Santa's reindeer scoping out a landing zone. Or was Santa there getting the things I asked for. :P

A deer really? Near the pond?

Interesting. We have a herd that runs on the side of our property to the field across the street. Then they will run from the field to the woods at the back of our property that has a stream that runs through it. Due to the severe drought we are in they may have been looking for water to drink at the pond because there is very little water in the stream now. Boy I sure hope not because if they fell in the pond they could do a lot of damage trying to get out.

We have never seen them near the pond though but I suppose it is possible.

Sammy our black and tan hound barks up a storm when they are running from one spot to the other. Not even sure how he knows they are out there.

In the side yard we have a persimmon tree and have seen deer dropping under the tree so they were eating the fruit as it dropped...

Regards,
Bonnie

Ok let's see if I can explain where the deer was. As I look at the picture from the above water cam, the deer was off to the right, on the far side of the wooden bridge and to the right of the water?. The picture is not as clear today so I can't really tell if it iswater or not. It moved to the left out behind the gazebo and deck going behind the bush or trees, then back to the right and out of the picture.

Yes, that is where the deer run through! There are 3 to 5 of them at a time.

On the very right side of the camera view you can see a tall evergreen. Kind of hard to tell it is a tall evergreen because it is at the very edge of the view. But yes, that is where they run through to either the field acros the street or the woods at the back of our property.

Good question, Vanessa. I have been asking myself the same thing.

Where is everybody? What is everybody doing this time of the year?

this is the time of year that everything that you wanted to get done...done. Instead of sitting by the pond talking with the fish you know how time flies when your with the fishes. The animal control world is very slow now so we can get other things done. Got 13" of snow last night boy a lot of shoveling  I keep checking every day to see if some one is on the forum. Everyone have a good holiday hope santa brings you every fishey you want

Here are the pictures that Lauraminskins sent along with the story

This was sent by a man in Rhinelander, Wisconsin

A very eventful day around here... A once-in-many-lifetimes experience! I saw this lil' feller run out in front of a car-- thought it was a lost baby goat. Stopped to get it, and WOW!! A real Albino Whitetail Deer. Just hours old, but doing fine. No Momma deer around. Another car nearly hit it in front of me ..

Well, he is THE neatest thing any of us ever saw. And such a 'freak of nature'; only one in more than a million on are ever born. He took his bottle of food, followed us around the h ouse, and is doing great. So, we called the Zoo & Fossil Rim , who were both interested, but we're going to send him to a rehab farm. Maybe he will make it in captivity somewhere and be appreciated. So rare... Sure wanted to keep him though but it's not the thing to do.... not LEGAL either. Here are a couple of pictures to show you. He was snow white, pink eyes, ears, nose and hooves. Kids called him POWDER. He was SO small. That is my shoe lying beside him. WOW! How cool is that??

Pass this around; a lot of folks have never and will probably never see another picture of an Albino deer fawn......

BTW we are expecting 8-12 inches of snow this afternoon tonight and tomorrow. Roads are pretty icy in spots already from freezing fog. The snow will help cover up the ice but it's going to be a messy weekend.

We don't have any snow yet, just big predictions, but the ice.........the OKC area got hammered. Teresa is down that way, I don't know what her situation is like, but I am farther north, we had ice, but not near anything like the Oklahoma city area. I feel sorry for the folks with no heat, let's hope the utility companies can get power back on soon.

I have a fireplace and use it to help with the heating bill and after the big ice storm several years ago, I now have a generator. The temps here usually aren't too bad, its the wind that just cuts you in half and Oklahoma has plenty of that.

My pond had 1/4 inch of ice on it, (gone now) the rocks around the waterfall are still covered with ice, and the fog is getting so thick, (continues to freeze) I can barely see the pond from the deck. The fish are huddled in the bottom and are ignoring the rest of the world.

The bright side is...next week we should get to see the sun. Hooorah!

We lucked out and missed the worse of the ice. I do know how they feel in OKC down this way we been through the same thing twice, ice everywhere no elec. for days and days. The last ice storm took all our trees and chest freezer and icebox full of food. Those was the longest days ever thought the elec would never come back on. One ice storm we took and put our freezer food and place it in clothes baskets and kept the food in our car. medokie... might have heard about the bad wreak near Okemah, Okla. last Sunday that killed 4 people the wreak was due to the ice storm. Two of the people that was killed was a couple from around here they was on there way back from Tulsa, Okla from a bowling tournament. My husband was friends with the guy and had went to school with him. He was 50 and his wife 49. You just never know what life is going to throw ones way.

Teresa and Vanessa - glad to hear you were spared the storm. We have been watching it on the news here.

A bit of a happier note, the storm that hit here and now moving toward the east coast is supposed to bring the much needed rain to the south east.

The drought is still the worst ever to hit the south. And now many cities have a limit of 6000 gallons of water per month per household! Any use above that will be charged for at a much higher rate per thousand gallons.

Really ironic is the cities are now claiming revenues are down because water use is falling. They are thinking of raising the rates to get more revenue. So essentially they are "punishing" those who are conserving water by a higher rate to make up for the lost revenues! Something is definitely wrong with this picture!
