Air Pumps for winter?

Postby carentz1 on Thu Oct 23, 2008 7:32 pm

I put in a laguna pump and filter when I built my bigger pond. They are probably much larger than I needed but I wanted to make sure I had enough flow for my falls & oxygen for my fish.

I just spoke to the local pond guy who sold me all my supplies and he says I should take out the filter w/UV for the winter and use an air pump.

I have always in the past kept filter (no UV) and pumps going year round. So I have no clue if I should do as I have done previously...just run it or remove the filter and just pump water through falls without filter or get an air pump.

Anyone have experience with this?
Thanks,
Cindy

I will be doing a newsletter about storing pumps and filters for the winter very soon. If you are not on the email newsletter, go to the main site and click join my email newsletter. Be sure to confirm the email that asks if you do want to receive a copy.

But in a nut shell, remove the pump to a bucket of water to a spot where it will not freeze. Check to make sure the bucket has water periodically over the winter.

Put your filter media in a laundry bag and drop it to the bottom of the pond for the winter.

Bring UV bulbs inside so they do not freeze and break over the winter. It is a very rare pond that gets green water in the winter so they are not needed. Here in zone 7 we drain the UV and leave the bulbs in place as once drained they will not break. UV lights need to be changed out every 12 to 14 months as they loose their effectiveness. And by storing them for the winter months you will increase their longevity.

Air pump and and an air stone is much cheaper to run than the pump.
