Do we need to add barley when the water temp is below fifty five?

Barely straw is suppose to control green water or string alage. The directions indicate that you're suppose to change it out every several months. I've tried using it several years ago and never noticed a difference. I no longer use it.

In late fall I perform the following to prep for the winter moths: perform a good clean out, perform a large water change, and add salt to a level of 0.3. During the winter I will continue to do small water changes.

I have never heard of anyone who had any success with barley. But I have had tons of emails over the years from those who said it did not work.

If you are trying to control string algae, the koi clay really does work. If it is green water algae, a UV is generally the answer. More plants will help with green water but unfortunately this is the time of the year most plants are dormant.
