Toads find my leaf catcher very romantic

Postby farprof on Sat May 31, 2008 9:38 pm

Twice this week when emptying the leaf basket for my pump I found 2 pairs of toads in close embrace  . Today there were 6 toads in the leaf basket but only 2 busy doing "the deed." The bottom of the basket was full of toad spawn. I dumped the whole thing back into the pond figuring the fish would enjoy the eggs for supper. The conjugal couple headed back for the leaf catcher before I could get it back, but veered away when they saw me approching to return the basket to the pump assembly. The first 2 times I found the couples I figured they had drifted in on the current from the waterfall but the pair today were quite clearly swimming to the site deliberately.

Do I need to do anything of just allow the toads to make fish food? Is it OK to dump the eggs int the pond?
So long and thanks for all the fish!

LOL. If frogs get in my pond, they never have time to breed. They immediately become fish food. But then some of my fish are 36 inches....

I find the eggs in my streambed this time of the year and remove them as soon as I see them. I don't want the toads and or frogs in my pond.

Every year we have to drain down the upper and middle ponds a couple of times a year to get rid of the tadpoles.

Not to worry all the tadpoles end up in a drainage pond.

The major thing to consider, is all those tadpoles add to the waste in the pond and if your filtration is marginal, you could be headed for trouble.
