Good Morning Sheryle, All, : )
Boy what a evening with the new pond liner. lol : ) That's a nether whole pond of fish, sts.
Rain is still keeping us behind, but I'm hopeing to get it all done by the weekend.
I will take pic's as we go so I can let ya's see how we did what we did. tehehe : )
Sheryle, I will do my best to answer your questions, I'm no expert for sure. : )
And Thanks for liking my pond and the kind words. : )
I have had a pond for 15 + years. This pond for about 13 years.
The size of my pump is a good size one. If I remember right it moves 100's of gal. of water an hour. I bought the biggest one I could afford at the time. The way I did mine is as fellows. Please bare with me K?
I place my pump inside another large water garden pot pulling the plug in threw the bottom/ side hole of the pot, I then add my pump an black tubing that will be long enough to reach my W/B/ Liner all the way to the bottom of the W/B/L.
I then add lava rock that has been cleaned very well before use**Most of my lava rock is 13 + years old, an only cleaned totally once a year** all around the pump to just below the top of the container,**what I call a pre filter** making sure I use only bigger lava rock around the pump intake. I place this pre-filter as far away from the W/B/F at the deepest end of the pond.
I then place cleaned lava rock about 2 inch deep in the bottom of W/B/L and then place the black tubing all the way to the bottom and along the side of the W/B/L, Then fill with lava rock leaving about 4 or 5 inch's so you can place a few plant on top of the lava rock in W/B/L , if you want to add plant's in it.
As for fish eating my plants, yea they do nibble on the ones I say they can, lol no just kidding. Most may not believe this but I have never feed my fish pre-made fish food. **Well maybe one time Years ago** they didn't touch it. I feed meal worms in the spring when coming out of winter and just a few times in summer, then a little more coming close to the cooler weather to carry them over for winter. I have never feed my fish after Nov.
I always make sure I have plants they like to munch on water celery and such are working well. With that said tho, I have raised my own meal worms for 18+ years which started because of the blue birds. I feed the meal worms organic oats and bran which is a two fold thing, food and bedding, and then I top feed with organic carrots apples potatoes, ext. and then about 4 times a year adding the fruit, veggie slices to a very good victim *dissolved* and apple or what ever slices soaked in the dissolved vitamin for 24 hours. Then just remove the fruit, veggie, slices and place in container with worms an beetles for great healthy meal worms to come.
This has been what has work for me for years. What's the ol saying, you are what you eat, well I know what my fish are eating and its all good. : ) Like another poster's have said, always add a few extra plants that your fish will eat readily and they will take care of the ol green stuff as well.
I may get flamed for what I'm about to say next, but here it is. Please don't flame me to bad. : ) Wondering if I should hit Submit or not, but here it is. : ) I'm just looking back of the recall of dog an cat foods.
In my thinking, feeding pre made food is something like feeding the kids happy meals everyday and we all know that aint good. Again its like a new born baby, the baby never knows what's it's missing until you start giving it pre made foods from a box, jar or can. They never miss what they never have had. My fish eat more healthy than I do because my mama an daddy gave me food that I would have never missed if they had not given it to me. Only good ol fruits an veggies with some bean protein would have been just fine. I Do Not indorse the feeding of earth worms or red wigglers. They have their place in the compost pile.
I want to back up a min here and address the lava rock usage. I have read that some folks don’t like it, but for me it has been the best and easiest thing I have found for my size pond. I will say tho, IF you know of someone that has a healthy stable pond get what I call a seeding from them **water and or in my case years ago, some of the lava rock from their filter** for your pond and start slowly, I just adding a few plants to start with then add more plants and 1 or 2 fish at a time slowly, until you have a stable pond. This is what has worked for me. Not saying its right or wrong, but that's what has worked for me.
I hope this has been some help, and if you have any questions on the method to my pond madness just let me know.
This is just what has worked for me, and is not what may work for others.
Have a good yall and catch ya's of the flip side. : )
