Putting in a new pond liner

Postby Amelia on Mon Jun 23, 2008 8:49 pm

Good evening ya'll, : )
Well we have had to put in a new pond liner and all is going ok. I was reading another post about getting out all the wrinckles and was thinking about doing the tape type thing, untill I read Bonnies post. But with that said, I do have a product called waterfall sealant by garden treasures. Do yall think this would work by just getting you folds ready and then lifting them just enought and squart in this product and mashing down really good, then wait for it to cure, says 24 hours?
I'm not sure if I'm gonna do it on the pond first , but may try it on some of the extra liner I have left over an see what happens. I'm wanting to make my waterfall much better than it was as well. I love the sound of a nice waterfall, not a trickle sts. : ) I also ran across a nice preformed pond. It has a pour spout on one of the preformed ponds and I'm also wanting to put in about a 3' waterfall between them. I will take some pic's of the preformed ponds and the area I was wanting to place them. Dont like haveing to cut the grass there anyway, : ) The area is somewhat small, but we would be able to see the pond from the kitchen, den and bedroom window. Any helpful ideas welcome, along with any do's an dont's.
Will add links to the newly lined pond still in progress due to rain. my pic's are too big from the pc.

Have a Goodun Ya'll

love it...... your pond is beautiful...
and your waterfall  what size pump do you use :?: .....
how do you keep your fish from eating your plants :?: ........
everytime i try to put my WH in the pond, the fish do everything they
can to get to them and eat the roots..... they are starting to try brown and have hardly
grown at all.... and i have had them for about a month.....
i have a green thumb everywhere but the pond

The main pump is 2.5 hp. In addition I have 2 pumps in 2 skimmers that are 2700 gph each.

Every pump returns to the upper pond so that I have the maximum water coming over all the water falls.

A bit extravagant? Yes but I wanted massive water movement and I wanted to hear the water moving.

My pond is 3 ponds, designed to run as one or as 3 separate ponds. My fish live in the lower pond and I have all bog plants in plant stands to keep the fish away from them. My lily collection that I have had for many years is kept in the middle and upper ponds. I do put a few babies in those ponds to keep the snails and plant leeches off of my lilies. Those babies are removed from the 2 ponds in the fall.

If your fish are eating your plants it means you must become more creative in finding ways to keep them out. For me, it means keeping the fish in on pond and plants in the other.

after my husband saw amelia's waterfall he said we could do something like that.....
he never wants to make changes....he thinks cleaning filter and skimmer is to much work.....
he has always said he wanted more sound and water coming over the fall....
we have the 2 small waterfall bowls but haven't been able to find the barrel liner with
pour side, i need to replace the pump on mine and thought about a 1000 gph
....and i saw she is using lava rocks.....in the top water basin..... how does that work?
do you ever need to clean it :?: ....i see in her link at the bottom of her page,
her fish just swim around with her plants and the plants are beautiful....
my husband said her fish must not be hungry,
she must feed hers more  he's so funny....
....i feed twice a day and they act like they are starved....crazy things..... :D

Good Morning Sheryle, All, : )
Boy what a evening with the new pond liner. lol : ) That's a nether whole pond of fish, sts.
Rain is still keeping us behind, but I'm hopeing to get it all done by the weekend.
I will take pic's as we go so I can let ya's see how we did what we did. tehehe : )

Sheryle, I will do my best to answer your questions, I'm no expert for sure. : )
And Thanks for liking my pond and the kind words. : )

I have had a pond for 15 + years. This pond for about 13 years.
The size of my pump is a good size one. If I remember right it moves 100's of gal. of water an hour. I bought the biggest one I could afford at the time. The way I did mine is as fellows. Please bare with me K?
I place my pump inside another large water garden pot pulling the plug in threw the bottom/ side hole of the pot, I then add my pump an black tubing that will be long enough to reach my W/B/ Liner all the way to the bottom of the W/B/L.
I then add lava rock that has been cleaned very well before use**Most of my lava rock is 13 + years old, an only cleaned totally once a year** all around the pump to just below the top of the container,**what I call a pre filter** making sure I use only bigger lava rock around the pump intake. I place this pre-filter as far away from the W/B/F at the deepest end of the pond.
I then place cleaned lava rock about 2 inch deep in the bottom of W/B/L and then place the black tubing all the way to the bottom and along the side of the W/B/L, Then fill with lava rock leaving about 4 or 5 inch's so you can place a few plant on top of the lava rock in W/B/L , if you want to add plant's in it.
As for fish eating my plants, yea they do nibble on the ones I say they can, lol no just kidding. Most may not believe this but I have never feed my fish pre-made fish food. **Well maybe one time Years ago** they didn't touch it. I feed meal worms in the spring when coming out of winter and just a few times in summer, then a little more coming close to the cooler weather to carry them over for winter. I have never feed my fish after Nov.
I always make sure I have plants they like to munch on water celery and such are working well. With that said tho, I have raised my own meal worms for 18+ years which started because of the blue birds. I feed the meal worms organic oats and bran which is a two fold thing, food and bedding, and then I top feed with organic carrots apples potatoes, ext. and then about 4 times a year adding the fruit, veggie slices to a very good victim *dissolved* and apple or what ever slices soaked in the dissolved vitamin for 24 hours. Then just remove the fruit, veggie, slices and place in container with worms an beetles for great healthy meal worms to come.
This has been what has work for me for years. What's the ol saying, you are what you eat, well I know what my fish are eating and its all good. : ) Like another poster's have said, always add a few extra plants that your fish will eat readily and they will take care of the ol green stuff as well.
I may get flamed for what I'm about to say next, but here it is. Please don't flame me to bad. : ) Wondering if I should hit Submit or not, but here it is. : ) I'm just looking back of the recall of dog an cat foods.
In my thinking, feeding pre made food is something like feeding the kids happy meals everyday and we all know that aint good. Again its like a new born baby, the baby never knows what's it's missing until you start giving it pre made foods from a box, jar or can. They never miss what they never have had. My fish eat more healthy than I do because my mama an daddy gave me food that I would have never missed if they had not given it to me. Only good ol fruits an veggies with some bean protein would have been just fine. I Do Not indorse the feeding of earth worms or red wigglers. They have their place in the compost pile.
I want to back up a min here and address the lava rock usage. I have read that some folks don’t like it, but for me it has been the best and easiest thing I have found for my size pond. I will say tho, IF you know of someone that has a healthy stable pond get what I call a seeding from them **water and or in my case years ago, some of the lava rock from their filter** for your pond and start slowly, I just adding a few plants to start with then add more plants and 1 or 2 fish at a time slowly, until you have a stable pond. This is what has worked for me. Not saying its right or wrong, but that's what has worked for me.
I hope this has been some help, and if you have any questions on the method to my pond madness just let me know.
This is just what has worked for me, and is not what may work for others.
Have a good yall and catch ya's of the flip side. : )

Your pond is lovely Amelia and the pictures are very helpful. I didn't install my pond (I bought the house and the pond came with it) and I'm wanting to make some changes to it. The main thing for me is fixing the shelves. So looking at your pics gives me a better idea of what I'll find when I pull up my liner. Thanks so much for sharing! :D

Hey Teresa, : )
I'm not sure where I got it, it's been so long ago. most likely w-world or H-depo, Lowes. I was looking for another one myself and can get Lowes to order it for me. said all I had to do was pay for it first and then wait until it was shipped to them. May have to just break down and order one. I will keep looking tho, and if I find a place that has them I'll let ya's know. : )
Have a Goodun. : )

I saw them at both at home depot and lowes they also have alot of stuff now, for the do it yourselfer pond maker. they have carried some plants as some of the garden centers around here don't cater to the ponder. we have to travel about 40 miles to get to a pond store. but to get the good quality I'de order from bonnie that way I know there isn't any cooties on them. the the home stores knew of it and bamm! they got it and sometimes it goes as fast as it gets here. I have to go to lowes here today and pick up some stuff, I'll check the price... shortly they will be having the 25-50% sale so if it is short money our sales tax here is 5%. the waterfall that she has can be digiused with rocks and plants so that it can't be seen. we use one on our indoor pond and we use lava rock. my brother has a small pond and bought his at lowes he raised the waterfall about 2 feet high and it splashes on the rocks below and runs into the pond, he had to play with it so it didn't plash all the water out. he placed the falls on cinder blocks and then built up around it so you can't see it. it was a good place to hide the UV light. on our waterfall filter we use our swimming pool pump now as our other pump failed. no swimming pool for me this year. we had all the extra pvc pipeing so we were able to put it together realy fast, and It changes our water over several times per hour. my husband knows how many i forgot.
