Does anyone know what this plant is called?

Postby Bonnie on Tue Aug 07, 2007 8:08 am

I bought it at the farmers market a few years ago. He called it a Hummingbird vine. I am pretty sure that is not the true name. The hummingbirds do love it though

Here in zone 7 it is an annual. It dies down in the fall and drops seeds.

It comes back every summer, all over the place. I have to pull out the seedlings that come up in surrounding areas. I leave a few of them and train them to the lattice on the back deck

I got the same plant from my neighbor and he called it a Hummingbird vine also. He told us to plant it and it would come back every year. That is until my wonderful husband used the weed eater to take care of it! When we get more from him I will have to put it into a weedeater free zone! Haha!

Yes that is the plant. Rich keeps telling me I need a secretary. Actually he will do searches for me if I ask him....but this time of the year he is so over worked too that I hate to bother him.

I just never seem to have time to search. I should have thought to check Dave's.

I just love this plant and so do my ruby throated hummingbirds.

Thanks again,

Bonnie

The obvious

was to search for the name I was told.

Sometimes local folks have names for plants that have no meaning in other parts of the USA. Evidently it was not the case this time.....

The one that cracks me up the most is Elephant Ears.....

I love that one too. The one that gets me is my family here in Georgia calls a certain tree a cotton wood. My mother from South America calls it an elephant ear tree. I made a trip to Kentucky one time saw one growing in the front yard of a restaurant and they promptly informed me it was none of the above but was an empress tree…go figure.

Ps cottonwood did not pull up the correct tree in Dave’s (my first experience with the site)
