Frogs in the Pond

Postby jenniferr41 on Sat Jul 07, 2007 12:48 am

I currently I have 5 frog residents living in my pond. Thought I would share one of the pictures with you. They make lots of noise and make even more tadpoles!! lol

I love the frogs

And they are even easier to love when you consider how many bugs they eat.

We have zillions of these little iddy biddy toads all over the place, not much bigger than a dime. So when I am outside I am so careful not to step on them.

We have a pond that is 40' long, 6 inches deep that is lined with liner. Not really a pond so to speak but it where all the back wash water goes when we back wash our pond.

We were constantly flooding part of the back yard every time we back washed. And since we have good old southern red clay, it just stood there for days on end.

So we dug it out, put a liner in it and then a drain at one end and underground piping that goes way to the back of our property.

It is a sight to see later in the summer, if you can imagine hyacinths all in bloom 40' long and 6' wide just packed solid in there.

But I gotta tell you it is a haven for frogs and toads. One could not even begin to count them. And they are ever size right up to a huge old bull frog who took up residence there a few years ago. It is funny as heck because he lives in the discharge pipe in the winter. And when Rich backwashes in the winter, he comes flying out of there on the water.

Every kid that comes here wants to catch and take "Big Daddy" home and I will not hear of it!

Here is F-2 again, he is growing like a weed. Even though I feed him daily he tries to catch dragonflies and he patrols the marginal pots looking for baby fish.

Frogs are interesting creatures to watch. My daughter keeps trying to catch them - it's funny watching her get soooo close and then they jump into the pond...lol.

I guess the old adage rings true.....if you build it, they will come! :)

That is VERY true

Postby Bonnie on Sat Jul 07, 2007 1:35 pm

I get emails of those wanting to buy or attract frogs.

I always reply, be patient, they will come! And be careful what you wish for because it is not just one that arrives at the pond. They bring all their relatives too! LOL!!!

Here is F-2 this morning trying to hunt. I sat there for 30 minutes waiting for him to catch something. I felt sorry for him and went to the pet store and got him 20 crickets. He is happy now.

F2 is beautiful.
We've had our pond for 7 years now and no sign of frogs moving in. I hope to catch a couple next month. Going to visit an aunt who's backyard used to be the best place to catch frogs when I was a little girl.

KG, what a wonderful sight. This last week my pond froze over again. I found 5 frogs frozen in the top inch of ice in my pond  Mother nature... always gets her way.

I lost most of my Greenies last year due to a late freeze. I got a dozen tadpoles later on that month and when I turned them loose in the pond the Koi slurped them up like malted milkballs. A few survived but eventually F-2 got them.

Love your frog! It seems so happy among the plants! Some people don't like their "noise" but I consider it beautiful singing.

Amen to that!
I just put in a tiny pond (my first) and last night the froggies showed up!
They were so loud my hubby couldn't sleep
Of course it doesn't help that the pond is directly under my bedroom window

When our daughter moved from NY to NC in 2002 she slept in the upstairs bedroom that over looks the pond. One has a panoramic view, the best view from the 2 upstairs room.

She complained about the frogs and toads at night and the birds in the morning. I have numerous bird feeders and houses all over the back yard.

She finally moved out and into her own place after a few months.......I wonder if it was because of all the noise here?

We have central air here, a must to most southerners, but we never run it. I keep my doors and windows open all the time during warm weather because I personally love the sounds of nature.

To each their own.

Maybe Joe will see this post and reply about a tiny baby turtle that appeared out of no where and how he has setup a separate tank for it...

That's pretty funny. My brother and his family live in NYC. Whenever we sleep over their place we have the hardest time sleeping due to all the noise outside (the city never sleeps). We all can't wait to get back to our house and hear the abundance of frogs, peepers, birds and other wildlife.

Speaking of frogs when we first moved into our house we had a number of small resident frogs living in the pond. Some would get caught up in the bottom drain plumbing (what a pain to get them out if they didn't make it all the way to the pump) and others didn't survive the winter for whatever reason. But ones that did make it we found them living comfortably in the pond, bigger than the previous season. When we did our pond expansion last summer these frogs apparently got wind of the destruction of their home and went elsewhere.

Once the pond expansion was completed it only took several weeks until they found their way back. This year these frogs are huge. So huge it is somewhat comical to see them make their way around outside the pond. But they don't bother the fish. Every few nights I see three of them at the edge of the pond, one on the left side of the pond, one on the right and one in the center. Just sitting and content. I thought I would try to tickle one under the throat and he must of thought my finger was a bug and tried to snap at me.

Then there are the tree frogs (the ones who make a loud chirp by expanding throat). One of my kids caught one and thought it would be neat to bring it into the house. Well in a matter of minutes we heard their friends chirping outside then the one in our house started in. Got so loud we couldn't hear the TV. It wasn't long before it was taken back out to join its friends.
