Sharing a crazy scene from my backyard late this summer. Hundreds of birds feasting on thousands of dragonflies feasting on "flying ants"?? Every square inch of the ground was literally crawling with these creatures then poof they were gone

Wow Pam
can you see both birds and dragonflies in the video or are they all birds? They are really moving around :!:

Hi Murph

Wish I'd gotten better footage. :(

Almost all of what you see in the video are dragonflies. The birds were higher up. I tried to move the camera up to get the birds but the lighting was bright.

It took me forever to figure out what they were after until i looked down at the ground. I'm not exaggerating .. completely covered with some type of red insect with wings and they were everywhere even on the other side of my house. Maybe that's what the birds were after too. I'm not sure if birds eat dragonflies? prolly so. Mostly gulls. I do live by a lake but I have Never seen so many of anything like that. Ick.

I took a couple pics of the ants - I'll see if i can find them

The ants (fire ants) in my yard swarmed about 3 weeks ago. Now there are little mounds everywhere. I am planning their extermination as we type…Termites swarm as well but usually in the spring.

Hi Pam just caught your second photo. Those are ants. The virgin winged queens and male winged ants will leave the nest and search for other ants from other nest. Sometimes forming large swarms. When you’re lucky a lot of nest will swarm at the same time causing what you had a chance to experience. Lucky you not many get to see it. :D

I'm thinking what I experienced was more along the lines of a panic attack.

Some people catch the Aurora Borealis. I get flying nuns?
