A view to a kill

Postby Koigardener on Mon Jun 11, 2007 11:50 am

A few weeks ago I was cleaning the pond prefilters minding my own business when I saw a hawk land next door. Much to my dog's amusment I belly-crawled back to my house and grabbed the camera then hid behind a crabapple tree. The hawk had suprised a young squirrel and a deadly game of chess ensued. It took about 15 minutes for the Juvenile Red-Tail to checkmate the young squirrel but I had to give the little guy credit. He bravely stayed close to the hawk to avoid a strike but it only took one mistake when he strayed a little too far...
The pics are in desending order here.

Wow! good play by play. I'm surprised your dog wan't going crazy. Mine would have. She gets amusement out of birds flying over and loves to watch the geese going into our neighbors ponds.

KG great shots.
I keep birds in my house near a window. I had noticed that a red-tailed hawk was spending a lot of time on a large tree in the back yard. I was afraid he was after the koi. One day while sitting at the computer I heard a tremendous crash  . Loud enough that my wife heard it while taking a shower. I glanced up just in time to see the hawk sliding down the glass of the window in the bird room 8) . Looked just like the bird in the windex commercial. The birds were going crazy. He left and has not returned thank goodness. I had always pictured it swooping down and snatching up one of the koi

Hawks and koi

Postby Bonnie on Fri Aug 10, 2007 2:38 am

A few years ago in late fall or early winter Rich was looking out the kitchen window and saw hawk dive at the pond.

We had netting on the pond at the time and the netting was laying just under the water. Evidently the hawk did not know the netting was a threat to him. Rich said he king of re-bounded from the netting. He flew to the arbor next to the pond and sat there drying himself off.

Speaking of birds, I have a customer in SC that was having a problem with an owl at night.

Together we came up with a solution of stringing fishing line from tree to tree, (he has tall ever green around his pond) across the pond and back and forth zig-zagging the line. The fishing line was almost invisible to the human eye and it did the trick of keeping the owl out of his pond at night.

The fishing line was high enough that folks could move freely around the pond but it kept the owl at bay!

I knew eagles would since I had seen it live in Alaska. I want to put an arbor and some screening over the pond but have not had a chance. Great idea with the fishing line. :D Wonder if it would help keep the cranes away?
